Pines Charter NEHS Membership Requirements & Application

  • 10th-12th grade PPCHS students with a minimum 3.0 unweighted cumulative and English GPA may apply HERE to become NEW, rising members of Pines Charter NEHS. The deadline for new member applications is 8/31. This form is NOT for returning members.

  • Returning, previously inducted NEHS members must fill out a returning members form by 9/30.

  • Requirements for induction and continued NEHS membership:

    • All applicants & returning members must maintain a 3.0 cumulative & English GPA.

    • New members/rising inductees will pay $20 in dues to include the $15 fee we must pay to register each member in the NEHS database and the $5 for your induction pin. Returning members will pay $10 in dues each subsequent year of high school in order to retain their membership with Pines Charter NEHS.

    • All members are required to complete at least 15 NEHS hours per year. It is each member’s responsibility to keep track of hours. Please visit the NEHS Canvas course (will be ready very soon!) to check the status of your NEHS hours, and email us at with any questions or concerns at pinescharternehs@gmail.com.
      • For rising members, at least 3 of those 15 must be completed before Thanksgiving Break, 5 before Winter Break, and 10 before Spring Break.
      • For inducted members who will continue their membership the following year, any hour deficits will be rolled over to the following year.
      • Only senior members who have completed their required hours and paid their dues will be eligible to purchase NEHS honor cords to wear at graduation.
  • Ways to earn NEHS hours include:
    • Members are encouraged to attend general meetings (typically 30 minutes or less), each which awards 1 hour.
    • Members are expected to attend and participate in events such as Recite Night & Poetry Slam. Performers earn even MORE hours!
    • Members with speech and debate experience may participate in the Debate Mentorship Program.
    • Members may submit original poetry, prose, or art to our literary journal, the atalaEach submission earns 1 NEHS hour. If a submission is accepted for publication, the member will earn 3 NEHS hours.
    • Members may earn hours by submitting to various writing contests highlighted at monthly meetings.
    • Members may participate in social media and outreach events such as Banned Books Week, Poem in Your Pocket Day, etc.
    • Senior members are encouraged to participate in the NEHS Common Reader scholarship (8 hours for qualifying submissions).
    • We sometimes ask for event/project donations, for which we award NEHS hours. Please note that a max of 5 hours can be earned through donations per academic year. It is each member’s responsibility to make sure that this cap has not been met before contributing any donation.
